Authorities run chain checks on alpine roads. No chains = turned away or fined. Don't risk your trip.
All 2WD vehicles must carry snow chains between the June & October long weekends on alpine roads (Kosciuszko Rd, Alpine Way, Island Bend/Guthega Rd).
Fines of $300+ for non-compliance.
Every vehicle — including 4WD & AWD — entering Falls Creek, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Baw Baw & Mt Stirling must carry chains for the declared season (7 June – 4 October 2026).
Diamond-pattern only — ladder, spider & snow socks are banned.

Do I need chains if I drive a 4WD or AWD?
In Victoria's alpine resorts, yes — every vehicle including 4WD and AWD must carry chains during the declared snow season. In NSW's Kosciuszko National Park the carry requirement applies to 2WD vehicles, but chains are still strongly recommended for all vehicles.
How do I know which size I need?
Use the fit finder above — select your rim size and tyre size and it shows the exact Autotecnica chain. Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall, e.g. 265/70R16.
Are these chains hard to fit?
No. They're quick-fit and self-tensioning — no jacking, no moving the vehicle. Most people fit a pair in just a few minutes, even in the cold.
Are they legal for the Victorian alpine resorts?
Yes. Autotecnica AUTOFIT chains are diamond-pattern, which is the type required at Victorian resorts. Ladder chains, spider chains and snow socks are not permitted.
